Physician perceptions and knowledge about limiting life support

Abstract This qualitative, descriptive study identified perceptions and knowledge of intensive care unit physicians about limiting life support. Results revealed different understandings reasons for support: shared isolated decision-making; obstacles such as family, professionals, legal issues unpredictability death; specific case reports with benefits, dilemmas, specificities by clinical picture age group. Physicians agree on the need to limit support but lack training topic differences in understanding remain. The multiple its use difficulties decision-making definition conduct are permeated ethical, cultural personal conflicts, demonstrating better education theme at levels health professional training.
